Don’t call me toxic!

Monday, 11 January 2010

ONE of the councillors who came under fire for allegedly ‘planning to turn Ivybridge into a toxic dump’ has assured residents that this is not the case.
Cllr Jim Lloyd spoke out in answer to a comment made by Eco Ivy’s Frankie Dolan during a protest against the proposed incinerator at New England Quarry. During her speech, outside the Watermark, Ms Dolan said: ‘We moved to this town for clean air, because we love the countryside, because we have children and Ivybridge provides a healthy and safe environment in which they may grow.
‘But our councillors are planning on turning Ivybridge into the toxic dump of the South West.’
Cllr Lloyd said: ‘I just think this needs addressing. Who exactly is she referring to?
‘Very few town councillors and district councillors are in favour of the planned incinerator. Her statement is totally untrue.
‘She has grouped us in together and I am strongly opposed to the statement.
‘I think Frankie is doing a magic job. I admire what she is doing and the way she is doing it – but she really shouldn’t group us all together in that way.’
Ms Dolan responded to Cllr Lloyds comments saying: ‘I welcome Cllr Lloyds support for the campaign against the incinerator and encourage all other councillors to join him in speaking out against the proposals. We need to have confidence in the people elected to represent us.
‘At the end of the day it will be councillors who vote on the County Council planning committee as to whether planning permission is granted for the incinerator or not, and also councillors on the South West Devon Waste Partnership who have already taken us down the incineration route in the first place.
‘Although there are likely some councillors who are opposed to an incineration solution for our waste, unless they stand up and make their voices heard, and start fighting for us, we will likely see a continuation of the plan to build an incinerator for our waste and Devon Cou-

Viridor are one of three bidders shortlisted to provide waste management solutions for the South West Devon Waste Partnership. If Viridor’s bid is successful New England Quarry would become an Energy From Waste facility and landfill site.
Cllr Lloyd explained that he intends to bring the matter up in a town council meeting in the near future to discuss where the council stands on the matter and what they intend to do about Viridors plans for the Quarry.
