Devon and Cornwall Police are asking people to be cautious while on beach walks after the recent influx of bad weather.
Kingsbridge Police posted the warning on social media, saying: "After storms like this, often all sorts of objects get washed up on the beaches.
"If you spot something on the beach and you aren’t sure what it is, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
"Do not pick it up or move it.
"Make a note of its location and make sure there’s a safe distance between you and the object."
A prime location in the South Hams for the unexploded ordnance is Slapton Sands which was the training ground for Operation Tiger – a series of large-scale rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
Shortly after the last-named storm of 2019, a Gazette reporter discovered a live shell which resulted in a beach evacuation and Bomb disposal unit detonating the device.
