A couple are set to cycle 500k in three days across Spain in aid of Myeloma UK.

Neil and Janet Cockings, from South Brent, will be completing their Myeloma Awareness Cycle to raise awareness and money for the charity after their brother-in-law, Daz Menge, was diagnosed with the cancer.

The couple have already smashed their target of £5,000 with the amount of donations currently standing at £8,245.

Janet Cockings said: “Since our brother-in-law was diagnosed we wanted to do something to increase awareness of this type of cancer.

“It’s been a long recovery for him to get his strength back and he has only just gone back to full time work, six months after the operation.”

Daz, from Plympton, was diagnosed in March 2016 after a routine blood test found the cancer, and has since faced extensive treatment and undergone 12 months of hospital visits, chemo, and a stem cell transplant, which is so far going well.

Myeloma is bone marrow cancer which affects multiple places in the body where bone marrow is normally active and, unlike many cancers, does not exist as a lump or tumour. It is also a relapsing-remitting cancer.

Most of the symptoms and complications of myeloma are caused by the build-up of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and paraprotein in the blood or urine.

Neil and Janet Cockings have been living in Spain for the past ten years and previously ran their own construction company in South Brent.

The couple will be riding from Madrid to Murcia, along with other cyclists who have friends suffering from the cancer, completing 100 miles each day on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of June.
