South Devon College Principal and CEO Laurence Frewin will retire at the end of the 2026/27 academic year, bringing his seven-year tenure in the role to a close.
Laurence will remain in post until summer 2027, having first joined the college as Vice Principal of Corporate Services in February 2010.
He said the decision had been difficult, but followed significant changes in his family life over the past year, alongside happier milestones, which had prompted him to reflect on his priorities.
“It has been the greatest privilege to serve as Principal and CEO of South Devon College,” he said.
“The College is a very special community, and I am immensely proud of our people, our students and apprentices, and the difference we make every day across Torbay, South Devon and the wider region.”
He added that he remained committed to leading the college with “energy, passion and determination” until his final day, with an important year of work still ahead.
During his time at the college, Laurence has overseen several major developments, including the £9 million University Centre, £7 million South West Energy Centre and £10 million South Devon University Technical College, specialising in engineering, water and the environment.
Other projects have included the £3 million Sports Centre and the £17 million Hi Tech and Digital Centre.
The college also achieved Investors in People Platinum status in 2017, while maintaining what it described as good financial health.
Martin Foulger, chair of the Board of Governors, said Laurence’s commitment to the college, its students and staff had been “unwavering”.
While the board was saddened by his decision, Mr Foulger said it understood the personal reasons behind it and was grateful he would continue leading the college throughout the academic year.
The Board of Governors will now oversee the appointment of his successor and work with Laurence to ensure a smooth transition.
