The Torcross Tank car park will close for nine months while work gets underway on vital improvements to the village’s sea defences.

The car park is due to close from Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to remain shut until June 2027.

The closure signals the start of a £19.8 million Environment Agency investment to strengthen Torcross’s sea defences and protect homes and businesses from future coastal erosion and severe weather - and is separate from funding being sought to repair the road.

According to the Environment Agency, the site will be used to support construction and storage activities during the works, which are designed to protect the Torcross community from coastal erosion and severe weather.

The agency said it was working with partners to minimise disruption wherever possible and urged people to make use of alternative parking in the area.

Parking will remain available at Strete Gate Car Park, Slapton Memorial Car Park and the Torcross Layby.

Public toilets at both Torcross and Strete Gate will remain open throughout the works.

The closure comes as public transport links to the area are being maintained, providing an alternative for those travelling to and from Torcross.

Country Bus has confirmed that its 93T service between Slapton Village and Dartmouth will continue to run “indefinitely”, despite originally being introduced as a summer-only service.

The 93S Stagecoach service between Kingsbridge and Torcross will also remain in operation.

The service is also being expanded, with Sunday and Bank Holiday journeys being added to the timetable.

The changes mean residents and visitors will have additional options for reaching Torcross without relying on the limited parking available during the sea defence works.

Further information about the works and any changes affecting access to the area is expected to be provided as the scheme progresses.
