A landmark occasion is coming up to Plymouth in April: English National Ballet, one of the country’s most prestigious dance companies, is returning to Theatre Royal for the first time in over 35 years.
English National Ballet’s dancers and musicians regularly tour around the country and are finally bringing their magic back to audiences in Devon, who will have the chance to experience the emotional impact of their performances.
On the programme: two recent dance works that promise to grab you from the moment the curtain rises. First is Body and Soul (Part 1) by Crystal Pite. The Canadian choreographer has won five Olivier Awards and is one of the most acclaimed dance creators around. This hypnotic piece will show you why: it stars a huge cast of 36 dancers who create mesmerising waves of movement across the stage.
The second piece is by Kameron N. Saunders, an artist who has recently shot to fame for his work on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and appearance in the Disney + documentary. The choreographer turns his creative energy into a new work, that will arrive in Plymouth straight from its world premiere in London. It’s inspired by his personal experience of dealing with newfound attention. With a music score performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic, it promises to be a soul-stirring piece.
Whether you’ve loved seeing dance for years or are thinking of trying it for the first time, the return of English National Ballet to Plymouth is an event you shouldn’t miss.
Expect intimacy, intensity and plenty of breathtaking moments that will take you away from the everyday and stay with you for a long time.
