Devon Cricket League 1st XI A division

Lewdown 206-9,

Cornwood 209-9;

Lewdown (eight points) lost to Cornwood (18)

by one wicket

There seems to be a pattern developing for Cornwood, with another one wicket victory in a tense encounter at Lewdown.

It turned out to be a day for the Cornwood's slow bowlers, who collectively picked up seven of the Lewdown wickets.

Jackson Thompson recorded the best figures of the Cornwood bowlers, picking up a superb 4-41.

Earlier opener Adam Goodliffe struggled dealing with coming down the slope. He adjusted his run up but never really felt comfortable and came out of the attack after just fourovers. At the other end Craig James had double success, picking up Burns and Geering in his first over.

Chasing 206, an opening wicket partnership of 52 between Thompson and Ben Warren seemed to be setting the Corns on their way, but then a regular fall of wickets left them under real pressure at 155-8.

Enter Elliot Staddon, who once again plotted the course to victory, putting on 45 with Kiwi Craig James, before getting out to a quality yorker from Billy Searle. The last pair needed eight runs off the last over, with the nerveless Adam Goodliffe striking two fours to win the game with one ball to spare.

With Budleigh coming unstuck against Bradninch, the result means Cornwood are now one point behind leaders Brixham, who picked up 19 points from their victory over Tavistock.

This sets up an exciting encounter for Corns at third-placed Budleigh next week.

Club spokesman Nick Goodliffe said: 'We will need to really apply ourselves for that game, as victory could see a healthy gap start to develop at the top.'

All Cornwood's four league sides managed to gain victories yesterday, the first time this season.
