Ivybridge will be looking to put their indifferent start to the season to one side as they tackle Porthleven in their first-ever FA Vase appearance at Erme Valley tomorrow afternoon writes Tim Leigh.

The club’s general manager, Brian Howard, said: ‘It’s a little bit of history for the club on Saturday, we’re taking on Porthleven in the FA Vase.

‘It’s the first time we’ve played in the competition, so that’s always exciting.

‘We’re expecting a good crowd, they’re bringing a coachload. They’re in the league below us but they’ve got a good bit of history in the competition so it should be an interesting game.’

‘Once we’ve played for a couple of years in the Vase we become eligible to enter the FA Cup, so that’s the long term plan.’

Howard was also clear that his side’s start to the season had been exactly what he had in mind, with last weekend’s draw with Tavistock leaving 14th in the table after five games.

He was refusing to be too downbeat, however, saying: ‘It’s been a little bit of a disappointing start to the season, even though we’ve only lost once.

‘We’re creating a lot of chances but we’re not turning them into goals just yet, but when we do I think we could give someone a right hiding.’

The Bridgers’ last game saw them welcome Tavistock to Erme Valley to play out Town’s second goalless draw of the season and their third tied match.

Howard said: ‘We should have won, but we just couldn’t turn the possession into goals.’

The story of Ivybridge’s season so far, but with the chances being created and the team organised well, once the goals come the Bridgers’ league standing should improve rapidly.
