South Brent Judo Club members have recently enjoyed success in competitions across the country. Five players fought at the Worcester U16 competition with spectacular results.
Cerys Callard (U34kg) and Kolya Schwinge (U66kg) both won gold, Adam Vosper (U38kg) and Lewis Widdicombe (U73kg) took silver and Pierre Michelin (U55kg) won bronze.
Tom Smith (U46kg) was the lone SBJC player at the Welsh Open, a notoriously difficult competition. Tom fought superbly and was narrowly defeated in the final, so took away a well-deserved silver. The next day he joined his clubmates at the Western Area Closed in Kingsbridge.
A sensational 16 SBJC judoka took to the mat. All the players showed great strength of character and spirit whether met with defeat or victory.
The club are extremely proud of its young judoka.
In the under 12 competition Daniel Ellison and Jamie Shipp both (U27kg) had six testing fights and finished just outside of the medals. Archie Hurst (U34kg) won bronze. Maddox Callard and Finn Stephenson both (U38kg) fought superbly and were close to medalling.
With the afternoon came the turn of the over 12s. Josh Shipp (U34kg) won gold, as did Adam Vosper in the U38kg, where Ben Bassett also won bronze. Cerys Callard (U36kg) fought up a weight group and won gold. Pierre Michelin won bronze in the U55kg and Ewan Baker won gold.
Kolya Schwinge was very dominant in the (U66kg) and won gold. Scarlett Hodge (U48kg) and Libby Daymond (U53kg) won silver. Tom smith and Davy Grey both (U46kg) fought in the most competitive group of the day missed out on the medals on this occasion.
The sterling effort of all the SBJC players helped Devon retain the western area team title, an accolade the county has held for an amazing seven years.
SBJC will be in action at the London Open at the weekend and then at Venray in Holland on May 30.
