A 17-year-old from Dartmouth has been arrested on suspicion of blackmail in connection with a police investigation about a fake Facebook account targeting young people in the South Hams.

School pupils in the South Hams have allegedly been asked to send photos of themselves to the account, and then have been blackmailed with those photos if they broke off the conversation.

A police spokesman said: ’A 17-year-old youth from Dartmouth has been arrested and interviewed on suspicion of blackmail.

’They have been released on police bail pending further enquiries until January 30, 2017.’

The police have previously warned young people not to accept friend requests from people you don’t know. Parents are advised to speak to their children about this issue and highlight the dangers of sending images and personal information.
