THIS weekend will see South Brent come together to do what it can to help and show support for refugees.
On Sunday morning, the village’s long running Breakfast Café will be held in the Old School Centre in aid of Luck of Birth, a charity with local connections working with refugees in Greece. Luck of Birth staff are currently helping to secure disused hotels as temporary accommodation for the most vulnerable.
The café this Sunday, February 5 from 9.30am to noon will also feature songs from Totnes choir Singing4refugees.
As well as offering music, food and good company for a great cause, the event will also act as a collection point for donations of urgently needed items for refugees. Donations will be sent where they are needed by Brixham not-for-profit organisation Humanity Has No Borders.
The evening before, also in the Old School Centre will be a screening of The Good Lie, a film starring Reese Witherspoon about a group of Sudanese refugees given the chance to resettle in America. It starts at 7.30pm.
One of the organisers Tiffany Strawson said: ’The Breakfast Café phenomenon is a big thing in our village. Started by Jane Wellens, it has now been going 13 years and they are always lively, lovely ways to eat a delicious breakfast in the community with your neighbours - and with each waffle you eat you are raising money.’
Speaking of the need to help refugees, she added: ’We feel it is important because everyone knows about the situation, but it is hard for individuals to know how to help, or which charity to support.
’This is a really simple and fun way to increase awareness, eat some great scrambled egg, enjoy some quality entertainment and support the refugees all at the same time. Plus you can bring along an old duvet or anything on the ‘needed’ list.’
