SOUTH Hams Community and Voluntary Services is appealing for new volunteers, highlighting the many volunteering opportunities available within local organisations.
Local voluntary services are in greater demand than ever before, and with the arrival of winter, there is additional pressure on hospitals and health services.
Help is needed to support vulnerable and isolated people and those recently discharged from hospital care. In particular, local caring and transport organisations need extra support.
South Hams CVS volunteering support officer Kate Hewett said: ‘Volunteering with caring organisations can cover a range of activities from visiting and sharing conversation, reading or playing a game, to helping with transport, shopping or joining the committee.
‘Volunteers can assist at lunch clubs, interactive groups, memory cafes, meeting someone for coffee, or befriending. There is always a role for you however much or little time you can spare, or how frequent your availability. Roles can be short-term or flexible to suit other commitments. Transport mileage and other expenses are often reimbursed for volunteers.’
South Hams CVS is encouraging South Hams residents to give any possible free time to help. Volunteering brings great satisfaction as well as a sense of purpose and a social scene.
South Hams CVS have launched a new online system for organisations and individuals - Volunteer Connect Devon - here you will find the volunteer opportunities posted by local caring organisations.
Alternatively, you can call or email for help in finding an opportunity nearby that suits you. You can also contact your local caring charity or community transport organisation directly.
South Hams CVS also holds regular outreach sessions, offering volunteer-related support and ideas to match people around the South Hams.
These are on the second Friday of the month at Dartmouth Library, the third Friday of the month at Kingsbridge Library, and the fourth Wednesday of the month at Ivybridge Library.
All are welcome to come along to get information and advice about volunteering opportunities for caring organisations, community transport or any other roles. South Hams CVS can also provide access to a Lottery-funded project providing support to individuals who need extra help to begin volunteering.
