YEAR 5s from a local primary school were buzzing with excitement after a trip to Langage Power Station.
Pupils from Ivybridge’s Stowford School visited the power station, which is run by Centrica, as part of their electricity topic.
They had a tour of the plant, including the control room, where they learnt that Langage can produce up to 885MW of electricity - enough to power almost one million homes.
The children also found out how the electricity is produced. Two gas turbines each drive an air-cooled generator, while the heat produced is used to power a steam turbine driving another generator.
After the tour it was back to the education room for some hands on fun. Youngsters got to discover which materials conduct electricity, how human pedal power can generate electricity and illuminate a column of LEDs, and test their new knowledge about power and energy.
Year 5 pupil Thomas said: ’Such an interesting and enjoyable visit, especially the tour of the power station. Everything was huge!’
