After almost £2000 worth of funding, Diptford Church of England Primary School has access to new computer equipment.
The Friends of Diptford School (FODS) initiated a project called ‘Digital Kids of Diptford’ to give a rural community better access to faster broadband.
FODS is a fundraising group registered with the Charities Commission which organises events and activities to raise additional resources for the school, for the benefit of all the children.
Devon Community Foundation awarded the grant of £1994 to the Diptford Community fund which enabled the purchase of computing equipment including programmable robots, video animation, software and data loggers for recording scientific data.
DCF is Devon’s local charity for local people, supporting hundreds of voluntary and community groups on the frontline.
In a rural community, some of the pupils don’t have access to fast broadband at home, so the project seeks to accelerate their digital skills during school hours. It is hoped that this will boost their life chances in an increasingly digital world.
Head Teacher of Diptford Primary School, Lizzie Lethbridge described how “motivated” the children have been by the new equipment.
“The grant is making a huge difference to their computing and problem-solving skills that are key to lifelong learning, particularly in the digital world we live in. Thank you to Devon Community Foundation and the Friends of Diptford School” added Mrs Lethbridge.
Laura Hewitt from DCF said how “delighted” they were to be able to support “this fantastic group”.
“It is groups like this working on the frontline that are so essential to our communities. It’s what makes DCF so important to ensure that together with donors and local groups we can build strong and vibrant communities for everyone in Devon, both now and for the future.”
