PLAYERS from Ivybridge Rugby Club are hosting a fundraising evening at their next home game in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The club, currently in 3rd position in the National 3 South West Division, regularly supports charities that are important to members and players.

It has raised more than £15,000 on fundraising drives for both Cots for Tots and CLIC Sargent in the past three years.

This year, members have chosen to support the Teenage Cancer Trust in honour of local lad Andy Hughes, who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia.

On Saturday, October 8 Ivybridge play host to Newton Abbot, with a collection to be taken during the game, followed by players submitting to a public head shave/leg wax. The afternoon and evening will also feature a tombola with prizes such as a golfing day and entry to local attractions, and a cake sale.

1st XV player, Alex ’Reggie’ Hall, who is organising the event with fellow player Jordan Anderton, said: ’Andy is a close friend and his diagnosis has not only completely changed his life, but has also had a big impact on his family and friends.

’He has been so very strong and upbeat about the situation that we wanted to show our practical support. Everyone is welcome to the game, which will kick off at 2:30, and the sponsored shave will take place after play has finished at about 5:30.

’All donations are welcome and can be made either on the day or via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Donation-07 . Ultimately the only way that we can beat cancer is through research, and any contributions you make will directly support this goal.

’It would be fantastic to meet, or even surpass, my £500 target in honour of a friend who has shown determination, dignity and courage in taking on cancer.’
