Nearly a record! The super performance given by the John Maddocks Jazzmen some 18 months ago paved the way for a near record attendance on their return visit to the Kingsbridge Jazz Club on Friday, April 7.
The Fisherman’s Rest cellars at Aveton Gifford were packed to capacity as 88 enthusiasts crowded in to hear them again, and they were not disappointed. John is a brilliant clarinetist whose seven-piece band thrilled the audience and applause was deservedly both generous and sustained.
The ’piece-de-resistance’ however was saved for the last two months when local, ex-London, reed expert John Wurr joined the front line making it eight musicians on the stage - and that is a record!
The gig on Tuesday, May 2 sees the welcome return of the amusing trombone virtuoso Kevin Grenfell and his Jazz Giants with a special guest, clarinetist Pete Allen. We then take a musical leap forward of some fifty years to the jive and rock ’n’ roll of the 50s/60s with the JB Jazz and Blues band on Tuesday, June 6.
The music starts at 7.30pm, but pre-booked early jazz suppers are available at 6pm. Sessions cost £8 for members and £10 for friends and visitors - who are always most welcome - and all can enjoy our dedicated bar in the pub cellars.
