The mayor of a South Hams town was one of the visitors to a popular charity open day on Saturday, June 2.

Around 500 people attended The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge’s Open Day, which was officially opened by the Mayor of Ivybridge, Councillor Anthony Khong.

This year, the Open Day, which is the centre’s main fundraising event of the year, had new look interaction zones, which proved a big hit with families. Each zone gave visitors the chance to find out more about the work of the charity and to take part in different activities. In one of the zones, people could make enrichment items for the donkeys. This resulted in dozens of herby logs, vegetable kebabs and enrichment boxes. It was a big thrill for families was to watch their efforts being enjoyed by the donkeys in the main arena.

There was also a dog show and a donkey-themed trail.

Bob Venn, senior centre manager at The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge said: “It was a pleasure to watch so many families engage with our donkeys and return home with a wealth of donkey knowledge that they had learned throughout the day.”

All proceeds from the event will help fund the work of The Donkey Sanctuary in the community and worldwide.
