As a very regular user of the public toilets all over the South Hams, I must take issue with Mrs M?Miles, Letters, March 16.

I have gotten to meet many of the crew that clean the loos and always express my gratitude for the work they do.

I suspect not many people would volunteer to take the job at what is probably minimum wage. South Hams District Council does a good service

However, it is not the council that create the mess and graffiti Mrs Miles, but members of the public.

I can only wonder at the mentality of people who smear their excremement on the walls and cisterns; ruin the toilet paper; urinate wherever they please; leave litter blocking the water works; or rip out fittings.

So, please Mrs Miles, address your displeasure at the public and not at the hard workers who see their efforts thwarted every day .

To all the toilet cleaners – thank you and keep up the good work.

Mr G Hilliard
