South Hams rugby star Henry Slade is in line to make his Six Nations debut after being named on the bench for England’s clash with Italy at Twickenham on Sunday.

Slade, who grew up in Yealmpton and now plays for Premiership high-flyers Exeter Chiefs, started his rugby career with Ivybridge RFC before starring in England U20s’ victorious Junior World Championship side in 2013.

A versatile backline player, Slade made several successful cameos during England’s unbeaten autumn internationals campaign and will doubtless be keen to show boss Eddie Jones what he is capable of given the chance.

With England gunning for a second grand slam in as many years after two opening victories, competition for places is ferocious and Slade, who will win his fifth cap should he make an appearance, has had to be patient despite impressing in his limited opportunities.
