A family of five found themselves up the creek without a paddle after falling foul of a notorious South Hams tidal road.

Two adults and three children became trapped after following a Sat Nav into floodwater, the fire service said.

It happened at around 9.28am on Wednesday, October 30, on the Aveton Gifford tidal road.

The route allows motorists to drive along the River Avon when the tide is out.

But those who venture out at high tide will quickly find themselves stuck.

The fire service said the family managed to escape uninjured from the incident.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire Control received a call where the driver of a car had driven along the tidal road after following a Sat Nav into floodwater.

“Fire engines from Modbury, Kingsbridge, a specialist rescue team from Camels Head and specialist officers were mobilised.

“Fire control stayed on the line with the caller.

“Two adults and three children were in the vehicle with water now entering the footwells.

“Tide times were checked, the tide was outgoing.

“Information was gathered to see how far the family had proceeded into the floodwater which wasn’t too far, remotely this was risk assessed and advice relating to wading to safety was given.

“The family were able to self-rescue.

“Fire crews were returned, except the nearest engine from Kingsbridge who proceeded to check the welfare of the family.

“Recovery of the vehicle was arranged by the owner and a local relative attended to pick up the family.”
