A man in his 50s has been taken to hospital after suffering burns to his leg when a fire broke out in two caravans on Thursday morning.
Two fire engines from Greenbank in Plymouth were sent to an incident in Yealmbridge Quarry in Yealmpton shortly after 8.30am, having received reports that a fire had started accidentally and was at risk of spreading to nearby static caravans.
Upon their arrival, fire crews confirmed that two caravans, used as security offices on the private boat and caravan storage facility, had been set alight. All people were clear of the caravans and the owner confirmed there were no pressurised cylinders involved.
Just after 9am, shortly after the crews’ arrival, an ambulance was requested for a male casualty in his 50s who had suffered a burn to his leg. While waiting for the paramedics, the fire crew administered first aid using a water gel pack.
A spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “The casualty was left in the care of the ambulance staff and duty of care was left with site staff and Western Power Distribution, who attended to isolate the power supply."
Shortly after, the fire crew confirmed that the incident was under control and that the fire was confirmed as extinguished at 10.34am.
The spokesperson said: “Fire crews used two hose reel jets, one compressed air foam lance, one light portable pump, which was sourced from a nearby river, one thermal imaging camera and small tools to extinguish the caravans, which were severely damaged by the fire.”
