Gary Edgecombe, of Camperdown Road, Salcombe, writes: I read Toby Leigh's report on the Batson Cross parking issues with interest, Gazette, June 26. Roger Clark was spot-on with his observations, which dovetail nicely with my comments published a few weeks ago. It's interesting to compare the two items... I received a great deal of flak following my comments, despite the issue being the same. I sincerely hope he doesn't enjoy the same degree of response. Let's cut to the chase. Salcombe is a permanent building site – the place is being destroyed by upcountry developers with no other motive than filling their wallets. We can expect no support from local government as long as a development bungs up a couple of one-bedroom flats. The developer can then flog off 90 per cent of his development to the second-home owners and waltz away hooting with laughter. With Malborough in mind, we now have no planning restrictions – just throw it up and ask for permission afterwards. There isn't any possibility of the young obtaining a home here.
