Michael Sturdee, of Culver Park Close, Kingsbridge, writes:
There seems to be an awful lot of bitterness by Brexiteers in the Gazette. I cannot understand why: they won - what more do they want?
I fought hard to Remain, but I accept the result, with sadness but without bitterness, and I hope I speak for most of us.
I think we should all work hard to make the new arrangement work, with the best possible agreement with the European Union, our major trading partner.
I note that already, without our counterweight to restrain them, the centralising forces there are becoming stronger. There is no going back.
However, that is not to say that I accept that we were wrong. After all, in our democracy when the Conservatives or Labour lose a general election, they accept that they are out of power, but continue to fight for what they believe to be right.
Do the Brexiteers expect the Remainers to do otherwise? And if the Remainers had won, there is no way the Brexiteers would have gone home quietly, is there?
It will take a long time to settle down after leaving. I hope it will all all water under the bridge in 10 years or so; I wish I could believe that our prosperity then will be strong enough to make up for the hard times we are beginning to go through.
