The new Emergency Care Building (ECB) currently being constructed at Derriford Hospital has been nominated for an international award, representing the country as the only project from the United Kingdom to proceed to the final.
Dalux is a construction software company who are providing the Building Information Modelling (BIM) viewer being used by University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP), together with its construction and supply chain partners, to build the ECB.
The Dalux “Celebrating Innovative Construction” Award 2026 recognises projects that “push the boundaries of construction” through their innovative use of the software.
“The Dalux tool provides the digital backbone for the ECB, allowing us to consolidate project information and connect design, change, coordination and delivery seamlessly,” explains Stephen Ford, Project Director for construction partner Willmott Dixon.
“Drawings , reviews and comments are managed in one place, with actions assigned and tracked to give teams clear visibility of responsibilities and decisions.
“Site teams can access the latest approved information directly where they need it, which improves accuracy and efficiency.”
The ECB is one of 25 projects from across the world which are up for the award, including the Kranjčevićeva Stadium in Zagreb, Croatia and Sky Park Tower in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Stuart Windsor, Future Hospital Programme Director at University Hospitals Plymouth, said: “This award represents the brilliant innovation and modern methods of construction being used as part of our new ECB.
“We’re incredibly proud to be recognised in this way and to represent the United Kingdom on an international stage.”
Due for completion in April 2029, the ECB will provide four clinical floors of modern, purpose-built facilities designed to support the delivery of urgent and emergency care services for patients.
The facility will serve patients in and around the areas of Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Modbury, Wembury and Ivybridge.
