RUNAWAY Lane in Modbury was blighted with a fly-tipped fridge-freezer last week, as thoughtless vandals dumped it in a hedge.
Fortunately, Modbury’s P3 Co-ordinators were quick to respond, and reported the fly-tipping to South Hams Council on Wednesday, September 7.
They are now awaiting a response from the district council, and put up a sign at the entrance to the historic green lane at the junction with Church Lane, stating: ‘If you have any information about this incident, please contact South Hams Council or Modbury Parish Council.
‘Please be vigilant and try to prevent further such obscenities.’
Runaway Lane is a Modbury Heritage Site, and an important site in the town’s civil war history during the Battles of Modbury in 1642-1643.
A plaque at the entrance to the lane explains: ‘In February 1643, two thousand Royalist troops withdrew from the conflict down this lane following a battle that had lasted twelve hours.
‘They had been outnumbered four to one by the Parliament forces during this second Battle of Modbury, the immediate result of which was the raising of the siege of Plymouth.’
The green lane is maintained by volunteers and runs for a mile up to Bluegate Hill.
