Just before Christmas we had a fascinating guest for the night called Simon Clark, a man full of fun and amazing energy who is running around the UK to raise money for the Ecologia Youth Trust, which helps traumatised children.

He turned up on our doorstep in South Milton after we had a phone call from a friend in Plymouth telling us he was heading in our direction and asking if we would we put him up for the night.

We had a lively, chatty evening, enjoying stories of his adventures and also about his inspiration – a woman named Rosie Swale Pope, who ran around the world aged 57, which is the same age as Simon.

We saw him off the next morning heading for the coast with his 11-kilogram rucksack, which I would have found heavy to carry just walking up Kingsbridge high street.

But Simon ran down the road with it after telling us he was relishing the thought of sleeping out under the stars that night at East Prawle as he headed east.

If you have friends or family along the way who could put him up for the night, please look at his Facebook page and let him know – www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=simon%20clark%20posts.

At the time of writing he is around the river Exe.
