SOUTH DARTMOOR Young Farmers Club held their annual field day and ploughing match last weekend at Treeby Farm on the Lyneham Estate near Yealmpton.

Around 100 young people turned up to take part in an enormous array of events and competitions held throughout the day.

Competitions were organised for both vintage and commercial tractor ploughing, root vegetables, corn, produce, handicrafts, livestock, tug of war, clay pigeon shooting and many more.

The Young Farmers Club organisation was started in the 1920s to give young people in the countryside a way of socialising.

Several of this year’s competitions were sponsored by local and national businesses. The ‘boat race’ drinking competition, was fuelled with milk sponsored by Dairy Crest, the Gun Room in Ivybridge sponsored clay pigeon shooting and several businesses provided tractors for the day, including the MST Group, CR Willcocks, Masons Kings and IDM services.

The judge was Devon young farmers club’s county chairman Caroline Trude and a team of local farmers and merchants. Rupert Shinner, chairman of the field day said: ‘It was a fun day and the level of competition was really high. It was nice to relax and compete after the harvest.’
