A mum and dad are taking on a sponsored walk for charity Parkinson’s UK after their daughter was diagnosed with the disease aged just 39.

Sue, 67 and Richard Berrill, 71, from Ivybridge will line up with other supporters of the charity, and their family dog, Doug, at Port Eliot House and Gardens in Cornwall on Sunday, June 11.

The day, featuring different distances for walkers of every fitness level, is part of the Walk for Parkinson’s series which sees events taking place over the summer months at locations up and down the country.

The couple will walk five miles to raise vital funds for the Parkinson’s support and research charity.

Sue said: “My eldest daughter Martha was diagnosed last year with early-onset Parkinson’s, although she had been experiencing symptoms for some years and had been treated for other conditions.

“Parkinson’s is not associated with people as young as Martha, and it has been a struggle for her to not only get the diagnosis but for people to understand the difficulties she has with this condition.

“We are walking to raise public awareness and hopefully the money raised will go towards finding a cure in her lifetime.”

The family aim to raise at least £150.

Sky Sports presenter and champion of Walking for Parkinson’s Dave Clark was diagnosed with the disease himself in 2011. Dave is encouraging as many people as possible to get involved in the events.

He said: “Thank you to Sue and her family for signing up to walk for us. In 2016 I completed my own 200-mile coast to coast walk for Parkinson’s UK, it was tough but the sense of achievement when I crossed the finish line was fantastic.

“I know not everyone can walk that far, which is why our Walk for Parkinson’s at Port Eliot, with a choice of distances, is perfect for everyone.

“2017 is going to be our most ambitious year yet for the Walk for Parkinson’s series. With every pound that we raise we get closer to a cure. So please join us at Port Eliot and help us step closer to our goal of improving the lives of every person affected by Parkinson’s.”

There is still time to join the Berrills and sign up to Walk for Parkinson’s. Everyone who registers will receive a free Parkinson’s UK t-shirt, fundraising pack and at the end of the walk, a finishers’ medal.

The charity is hoping to raise at least £400,000 from the 32 events, and suggests walkers aim to raise at least £50.

All money raised will help Parkinson’s UK’s work to provide support and information for people affected by Parkinson’s and to help find better treatments, and ultimately a cure.

As well as walkers, the charity is on the look-out for volunteers to help register people at the start/finish area or to be a walk marshal at various points on the route during the Port Eliot walk.
