CELIA PETERS, of Fore Street, Kingsbridge, writes:
On Thursday, October 1, at 1.45pm in Kingsbridge’s Fore Street, an elderly gentleman fell over that lethal bus platform kerb. Will it take someone’s death to find a better solution?
Passers-by and local traders rallied to help, including a couple who had been waiting for the 12.30pm – what is happening to the local bus services? – bus to Plymouth. Luckily, one of that couple was a retired nurse and they both did all they could and more to make the patient as comfortable as possible until the professionals arrived.
Oh dear! A paramedic first responder came along at least one hour after the fall.
Eventually, at around 3.45pm, two hours after the incident, the ambulance arrived. Meanwhile, that poor man – Ernie – had been lying on the pavement for all that time in considerable discomfort and showing signs of shock and, despite our best efforts, extreme cold.
I am sure that all who witnessed this event will be so upset at the almost unbelievable delay.
Good luck Ernie. We’re all rooting for your full recovery.
A passing motorist – a local fisherman, perhaps? – in a white and grey pick-up, kindly left a pink towel to put under the patient’s head. I have that towel, thoroughly laundered – it’s available from Pete’s Shop, opposite the post office.
