SOUTH Brent Carnival Club is counting its trophies after a successful 2015 season, and looking ahead to this year’s antics.
The club’s ‘España’ float harvested numerous trophies and cups this year, testament to the hard work of the carnival volunteers who design, construct and maintain the float through its six-month season.
During the season España and the South Brent carnival royalty won: 13 first places, five second places and two fourth places from the ‘world famous’ Bridgwater and North Petherton illuminated carnivals, and was three times named best overall float on the Devon circuit.
Carnival Club chairman Gerald Cleave said: ‘January is always a busy time for us. Not only are we busy fundraising to finance the 2016 float, but also discussing final designs for the new float along with basic maintenance.
‘2015 saw much positive feedback regarding the float design. Of course it becomes increasingly difficult to improve on such popular themes, but we will do our very best for 2016.
‘The traditional Summer Carnival has been parading through the village for almost as long as anyone can remember. It’s wonderful to think we can keep this tradition alive when so many local towns and villages have seen their clubs fold.
‘As always we send out thanks to all those who work tirelessly to keep the club running.’
The club’s fundraising begins with a cabaret evening on Saturday, January 30 at Rattery Village Hall. The night will feature music, comedy magic and an unspeakable illusionist, with a ploughman’s supper and pudding – full details from the club secretary on 01364 73292.
Carnival performers for the 2016 season are due to be chosen next month, and the club is encouraging as many as possible to apply to be part of this tradition. Again details can be obtained from the club secretary or the club’s Facebook page.
South Brent Carnival Club has its own website at www.southbrentcarnival.org.uk, although it is currently undergoing an upgrade, as well as the Facebook page where photos, events and general carnival information can be found.
The club is also keen to encourage new members to join, and has planned its annual general meeting Monday, February 15 at the Pack Horse, South Brent. All are welcome.
