In response to the debate about placing restrictions on holiday home ownership, we have to be careful what we wish for.
We are all lucky to live in an amazing part of the country and with that others will naturally want to come and share what we have as well.
Sadly, the upper housing market in the likes of Salcombe is what it is and you can never change that. Take away the wealthier owners/visitors and it is not just the housing market that would crash, but everyone who makes a living in the town servicing this market will be affected.
We are far better off with what has been suggested – ie drawing a line in the sand now and saying any new homes built moving forward can only be bought and used as a main residence.
This would take the heat out of city bonus money and the like inflating prices artificially and will give us a local market that will create its own level – possibly a little like the Channel Islands, where you have an islanders’ market at a lower price and another for outsiders.
I imagine the stance St Ives has taken may affect tourists and others from wanting to visit them and us, so we have to be careful we do not alienate the income, jobs and atmosphere visitors bring to the South Hams.
