Chris Bell, of Island Street, Salcombe, writes:
May I take this opportunity to thank MP Sarah Wollaston for putting into the public arena the opinion about the so-called ‘refugees’ in Calais that I, and most of my friends and neighbours, absolutely agree with.
I hold no truck with John Green’s sanctimonious, do-gooder ideas about any ‘humanitarian crisis’ in The Jungle.
Not a single one of its inhabitants has to be there – each is free to leave at any time or even – say it quietly – apply legally and correctly for asylum in France or Britain.
Or could it be that they are quite unconcerned about breaking French and British law by breaking in, mob-handed, to the Channel Tunnel, or chasing trucks along French motorways in order to get access to sealed containers? All with the intention of entering the UK illegally and therefore residing here illegally, with all that such a status must entail.
Please, Mr Green, answer for me a question to which I have never yet heard a satisfactory response: if these ‘refugees’ are indeed in flight for their very lives, why have they crossed 15 safe countries and as many borders to reach sanctuary in a campsite? Why were the first or second safe countries not good enough for them?
I believe it is because we in Britain are thought to be a soft touch, with our benefits system and the NHS, and wet liberals such as Mr Green are reinforcing that belief, whether he means to or not, thus encouraging more economic migrants to make the journey to The Jungle and exacerbating their problems, and ours, for years to come.
Speak freely, Dr Wollaston, there are plenty in the South Hams who agree with you.
