AS autumn starts to make its presence felt with chillier mornings and leaves on the turn, this is a lovely time to visit Lukesland Gardens just outside Ivybridge.
This year’s autumn season starts on Sunday, October 9, continuing on Sundays and Wednesdays from 11am – 5pm until November 13.
The shelter belt of beeches planted by the Victorian owners to protect the 24-acre garden from Dartmoor winds turns a glorious gold, while more exotic species such as acers, cornus, enkianthus and ginkgo reflect their fiery autumn tints in the pools of the Addicombe Brook.
The Howell family, who open Lukesland through the National Gardens Scheme, serve up seasonal soups and cakes in the tea room, by a log fire. And children, who are admitted free, can enjoy a fun nature trail around the grounds, exploring the many secret paths and bridges in this delightful woodland valley. Dogs are also welcome on a lead.
The interesting Victorian gothic interior of the house will also be open for a tour with the owners on Thursday, November 10. This must be booked in advance through www.invitationtoview.co.uk or 01206 573948.
