K BURROUGH, of Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, writes: My wife and I have taken our annual holiday in the Kingsbridge area for the past 45 years. In the beginning we did so with our young children, who now holiday in the Kingsbridge area with their children. One of the highlights of these holidays was a trip or two on the River Maid from Kingsbridge to Salcombe, shopping in both of these towns, along with many other cruisers. It was a great disappointment to arrive in Kingsbridge this year only to find that the River Maid ferry trips have been suspended due to excessive fees being demanded by South Hams Council and Salcombe Harbour Authority for use of public landing facilities that, being tidal, are not even accessible for much of the time. I think both of these parties have shot themselves in the foot. This small local business should be encouraged in its efforts to provide a service for holidaymakers and residents and for boosting the local economy and should not be presented with unnecessary obstacles. Or do Salcombe and Kingsbridge wish to lose a very popular, very long-standing local attraction? Surely local trades, residents, the boating fraternity and tourists should rally round and support this business. It affects us all. Please think again South Hams Council and Salcombe Harbour Authority.
