ST PETROC Church in South Brent hosted their bi-annual flower festival last weekend, raising in excess of £1,500 for Safe Breaks Holidays.
Safe Breaks Holidays is a charity based in Ashburton, providing holidays, activities and clubs for young people and adults with additional needs.
It has a local connection, with some people in the village benefiting from the charity’s work.
The theme for this year’s flower festival was ‘Magical Musicals’ - with each floral display being a tribute to a popular musical or opera, including Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the Pirates of Penzance, Carmen, South Pacific, Singing in the Rain and Frozen.
Greg Wall, one of the organisers said: ‘Despite competing with Andy Murray, we had a great number of people turning up.
‘We were delighted with the response, and many people said it was the best festival yet.
‘Those involved put in a lot of hard work, with preparations beginning the weekend before.
Greg continued: ‘There are two families involved, who have been arranging flowers in St Petroc since 1935 - when flower arranging began in the village.
‘We’re a team, so we don’t name individuals who make the arrangements. It’s a local celebration, not a competition. It’s a group activity, everybody is equal.’
The first South Brent Flower Festival was organised in 1991, and is held every other year over the second weekend in July.
