Michael Fletcher, of Filham, Ivybridge, writes:

I refer to the article in the Gazette, October 21, concerning the issue of an ancient bridleway.

The very idea of one local government entity taking another to court to decide whether it is appropriate to reinstate a bridleway that has been derelict for scores of years is obscene, immoral and a disgraceful waste of taxpayers’ money.

The only parties to gain from this nonsense will be lawyers, who will undoubtedly walk away with a six-figure payout in legal fees.

We the people did not vote for this misguided collection of politicians to squander our taxes on legal fees when there are far more pressing matters in need of attention, ie potholes in the lanes, poorly maintained road drains, community facilities, help for young people, care for the elderly etc.

As for ‘kicking out members of the public and press’, it is the sort of behaviour one would encounter in Russia. No doubt Donald Trump would find it inspirational in his quest for the White House in the USA.

The core of the matter is, who needs this equine facility? The fact of its antiquity is not sufficient to waste money on something that is of no practical or recreational value in present times above that which already exists.

I would estimate that there are in excess of 200 kilometres of lanes and bridleways in the parishes of Ugborough and Ivybridge.

To the north of these two parishes there is a vast stretch of moorland, bridleways and footpaths.

I point out that this facility is far safer and less restrictive than thoroughfares, in which riders are likely to meet tractors, carrier wagons and motorists who might well be careering along and late for work with no regard for pedestrians and horse riders exercising their steeds.
