I found your article ‘Residents successful at shushing pub noise’ very one-sided.
Only a few residents who have moved into houses opposite the pub have complained. The pub has been there for more than 100 years, while residents who have lived near the pub for many years have had no problem at all, and yet you have no quotes from these people.
The pub’s licence allows it to serve alcohol until at least midnight, if not later – 11.30pm is not excessively late to be outside on a summer evening.
Surely if the noise was that bad every evening the police would have been called on numerous occasions and the matter would have come to light earlier.
Why, when the hotel and pub are addressing the problem, do they go to the press? An axe to grind maybe, or attention seeking?
The staff at the hotel and pub work hard and by the time they finish their shifts the only place to relax and socialise is the pub. Even if the pub stops serving drinks at 11pm and closes, the lights still have to remain on to allow the staff to clear up, or are they meant to do this in the dark?
I also presume the complainers have contacted South Hams Council to ask for the street lights in their road to be turned off by 11pm.
I very much hope that those people who have complained are pleased with themselves for moving into a village and trying to ruin a long-established business, which up until now has had a good relationship with the local community and has supported the local businesses and the local school, which three generations of my family have attended.
