MODBURY Fair ended in a blaze of sunshine and glory at the weekend, as nine days of festivities culminated in the popular carnival parade.
Blessed with great weather, apart from a few spots of rain during the Modbury Mile fun run on bank holiday Monday, this year’s Fair has been hailed a success by organisers.
Fair committee chairman Liz Edwards said that this year’s royal theme, chosen to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday had really ’struck a chord’, with great window displays in shops and carnival entries up on recent years.
The Fair and all activities including perennial favourites like the maypole dancing, duck race and pet show are the result of months of hard work by the committee, which got together in January to begin organising.
Liz said: ’Thanks go to all the event organisers, helpers and unsung heroes who made this year’s Modbury May Fair Week such a success, and to all the participants and spectators who came along to support the week’s events.
’Special thanks to Anthony Davies and Bob Witts, who help with Kingsbridge Carnival and volunteered to act as head marshalls for the Modbury carnival.
’My personal thanks go to Guy Thomas, secretary of the May Fair committee who has worked tirelessly to pull the whole week together so successfully.’
The large turnout for Saturday’s carnival procession saw fierce competition in many classes. Coming away with prizes were: individuals Felix Harris, Poppy Edwards, and Emma Harvey-Doddridge; and groups Modbury Primary School, Philip Thompson and Gabriel Brooks, the Talls and the Flemings, Modbury Ukulele Group, The Exeter Inn, 1st Modbury Cubs, and the Shrimps playgroup and Village Waves youth club from Bigbury.
