A SPORTING institution that has enjoyed incredible success has celebrated its 40th anniversary with a gala dinner and dance.
Ivybridge Rugby Club players past and present joined supporters and VIP guests at Plymouth’s Duke of Cornwall Hotel to celebrate on Saturday, November 14, the exact date 40 years ago that a group of players met in a local pub and decided to start a team.
Founder member and current president Alan Knight said the original idea was actually the brainchild of his wife, and paid tribute to all the wives, girlfriends and volunteers over the years who have supported the players, and helped to give the club its family friendly atmosphere.
The event was organised by the Anniversary Committee made up of past and present committee members, who ensured a good turnout of former and current players including MP Gary Streeter, who played for the club.
Mayor of Ivybridge David Gray-Taylor and his deputy cllr Anthony Khong also attended, and Martin Aldridge was the speaker.
The 200 guests’ night finished with dancing to local band Sweat.
Club chairman Jim Burns, said: ‘It was a fantastic way to mark 40 years of successful rugby and, although the 1st XV didn’t manage to deliver a win, the 2nd XV beat Dartmouth and reclaimed the Five Handled Cup.
‘There was much laughter and singing as the club came together to celebrate how far it has come and it was fantastic to see our current senior players mixing with players who pulled on their boots for the club’s very first game.
‘As a rugby club that does not pay their players, it was easy to see why our first team have won promotion two years running - Ivybridge RFC is, and always has been, built on comradeship, team spirit and exceptional pride to be part of ‘Team Green’.’Mayor of Ivybridge cllr Dave Gray-Taylor added: ‘I was delighted and honoured to be part of such a wonderful evening with Ivybridge Rugby Club, and it makes you realise it's not just a rugby club that’s been going for 40 years - it's one big family that's growing all the time. ‘I don’t think there can be anyone in Ivybridge that hasn’t been involved with the club in one way or another. A club cannot get to celebrate 40 years without the dedication and commitment of the committee, its members and volunteers. ‘I would like to thank them all and wish them the best for the next 40 years.’
