Members of Stokenham Women’s Institute Celebrated the 50th anniversary of their club after a year delay.
Founded in October 1970 to accommodate women who were unable to make daytime meetings, the club went from strength to strength.
Thirty-six members and guests gathered at Stokenham Parish Hall in August to celebrate, nearly one year late, the 50th Anniversary of the W.I.
There were three founder members present, and six past presidents.
A beautiful anniversary cake was cut by the current president, Cheryl Watkins, and a lovely buffet and evening of reminiscing were enjoyed by all.
Jean Brooking Club secretary said: "Although we have been unable to meet for such a long time, members have been kept informed of happenings with regular newsletters, and special events marked.
’For Christmas 2020, all members were given a small shopping bag, stamped with anniversary details, which contained sweet treats, a Christmas card, a newsletter, and all the latest news from DFWI.
’This was repeated at Easter when each member received an Easter egg, and a COVID mask, handmade by Cheryl, with again all relevant documents.
Following their successful 50th Anniversary Celebration in August members of Stokenham Evening WI met again on Thursday, September 2 when they held their delayed Annual Meeting.
Jean added: "This meeting should have taken place firstly in May 2020 and then May 2021, both having been postponed.
"Nine members formed a committee for the period September 2021 to May 2022 with Cheryl Watkins taking on the role of President for a second term."
Reports were given for the last year by the Treasurer and Secretary, and the President gave her address. The evening ended with refreshment and chat. The WI are hoping that all will now go well and they will resume their monthly meetings as normal.
The next meeting is planned for this evening (Thursday, October 7) where Jean Brooking, a founding member will give a talk on the history of Stokenham Evening WI. All are welcome.
Meetings take place on the Thursday of each month at Stokenham Parish Hall at 7 pm. For more information contact Jean on [email protected] or Tel - 01548 580511.
