Comedian and musician Bill Bailey’s one-man show debuted at Plymouth Pavilions last night and has its second performance tonight (December 13). It’s called En Route to Normal and the title came even before the pandemic.
The reigning (for a few more days) Strictly Come Dancing champion dressed in black took to the stage in a show he describes as ‘not just a funny, heartwarming mix of stories, music and history, but a personal mission to find our way through these strange times.’
Topics covered included the problems and integrity of Boris Johnson and the government, lockdown, his experiences travelling to places such as Norway, Amsterdam and New Zealand, the music of Coldplay, dogs versus cats and being in Strictly, the dancer's pose and becoming tabloid ‘fodder’.
Bill showed off his great musical versatility playing a number of sometimes strange and unusual instruments and he sang not just in English but in French, German and even Turkish!
After playing Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag he gave his own ragtime versions of other songs from Motorhead to Justin Bieber.
I won’t reveal the finale but an entertaining evening from an eclectic performer who you can catch again tonight in Plymouth before the tour continues through Britain and Ireland.
