MORE than 200 bags of donated clothing, bedding and toys have been sent to help refugees living abroad following a weekend of activities in South Brent.
The much needed supplies were collected in the village on Sunday morning, one element of the activities organised by South Brent Refugee Support Network.
Sunday also saw a fundraising breakfast café held at the Old School Centre, alongside a raffle and a film showing on Saturday night. £1,500 was raised over the whole weekend.
The bedding and clothing was passed on to Brixham voluntary group Humanity Has No Borders, to be sent out to where it is needed. Money raised was shared between the organisation and refugee projects Luck Of Birth - run by a Totnes family in Thessaloniki in Greece, Singing4Regugees and From Syria With Love.
South Brent Refugee Support Network coordinator Jude Bishop said: ’It is heartening that so many people in South Brent supported our call for help at the weekend.
’There is a lot of real concern for the desperate plight of the many people fleeing from war, persecution and hunger. They are totally ill-equipped for coping with cold winter conditions and voluntary organisations are relied on to support them as best they can.’
The South Brent Refugee Support Network meets regularly to plan events. Further information from Jude Bishop 01364 72458.
