PUPILS at Brixton St Mary’s Primary School are feeling flushed with success after raising more than £450 to provide children in developing countries with decent toilet facilities.
The South Hams youngsters put on an enterprise day, with a number of fundraising activities including a sponsored obstacle course, cake sale, toy stall, penalty shoot out and games.
The money they generated will allow the school to ‘twin’ its seven loos with others worldwide, where the charity Tearfund will ensure clean water, basic sanitation and health education are provided.
A photo of each improved WC will be displayed at St Mary’s together with a toilet twinning certificate and GPS coordinates so the exact location can be researched online.
Head Dr Penny Fitch paid tribute to her pupils’ efforts. She said: ‘Toilet twinning provides people in the poorest communities on the planet with a decent toilet, clean water and all the information they need to stay healthy.
‘It’s the key to helping whole communities break free of the poverty trap.
‘For £60 we can twin our loo with a latrine and for £240 we can add a school block.
‘Children are healthier and able to go to school, parents are well enough to work their land and grow enough food to feed their family.
‘With better health, and more ability to earn a living, men and women discover the potential that lies within them to bring about transformation.
‘As we made more that £450 we can twin all seven of our toilets with others somewhere else around the world and are looking forward to putting our certificates and photos up.
‘I’m very proud to say that our fantastic pupils are actively helping to flush away poverty.’
