MORE than 300 people took to the streets and lanes of Cornwood and surrounds at the weekend for the annual Sibelco 10K Challenge and Fun Run.

The ever popular event draws the crowds thanks to its varied terrain and scenery and raises money for Cornwood Church, set to benefit from more than £3,000 after Saturday’s race.

China Clay company Sibelco sponsors the event each year, and other local companies also provide valuable support.

The race is organised by Roger and Heather Norrish, with help from some 50 people who marshall, take entries and assist with the many other tasks needed to make the day run smoothly.

First place this year was David Hampton of South Devon Athletics Club in 35.55 mins, while club mate Michelle Cowley was the first woman to cross the line in 41.03 mins, coming in 13th overall. Previous winner Peter Monaghan from Torbay Athletics Club was second man, followed by Michael Leswiak of South West Road Runners. Second woman was Nicky Savill of SWRR, followed by Agata Obiduwioz.

Peter Monaghan was also first in the veteran class - over 44 - with Catherine Shortman coming first of the veteran women.

Winners of the four kilometre fun run were Samuel Yearling in first, followed by Hamish Harris and Louise Handler.

Team winners in the 10k challenge were SWRR, with SDAC taking the women’s team crown.

Full times and positions are available on the village church website www.cornwoodchurch.com.
