A FATHER and daughter duo battled horrendous weather at the weekend to complete a sponsored walk in aid of those displaced by conflict in Syria.

11-year-old Izzy Grace decided to do something challenging in order to raise money for charity Syria Relief, which works inside the war torn country.

Izzy came up with the scheme ‘quite of her own volition’ according to dad Paul McFadden, and chose the 12-mile Dart Valley Trail as a suitable test of endurance.

Paul knows the route well, being responsible for its upkeep and signing on behalf of Devon County Council, and the pair chose Saturday, November 28 to tackle the walk.

Setting off from Totnes Tourist Information Centre at 9.40am, Paul and Izzy made it to Dartmouth waterfront as darkness fell at 4.40pm, seven hours later.

Afterwards, Paul said: ‘The weather was blustery, with a few heavy showers, and even hailstones briefly, but at least it didn’t pour down all day as forecast. Despite tired legs and sore feet towards the latter part of the walk, and two big hills to climb in the last 4 miles, Izzy was determined to finish.’

Izzy explained why she wanted to take on the challenge, saying: ‘I saw a video of a boy who had lost his leg and was given an artificial one. Then I saw this charity that helps injured people and gives them warmth in winter too.

‘So I decided that it would be a good idea to do a walk for all those people who find it hard themselves. I hope I can raise lots of money so more children can get free limbs and families can stay warm this winter.’

Izzy has raised more than £450 for Syria Relief so far. To support her campaign, visit www.justgiving.com/IzzyGrace.
