BARRY VAUGHAN, of West Alvington, near Kingsbridge, writes: It's heartening to see such sensible headlines in our special local newspaper, Gazette, May 22, about the possibility of a 71/2'-gauge 'revrailation' to the many Kingsbridge and district parched throats caused by Dr Beeching's 'Scorched Earth' policy, in sorrowful reference to the cruel lifting of our very own beautiful Primrose Line to South Brent – and still no promised replacement bus service. Not so sure as to whether the nominal 100-yard-odd-long curved track on the main road side of the quay is going to inspire heavy passenger numbers annually, or just leave everyone dissatisfied in varying ways. Nor is this 'garden path' length of route likely to fascinate all with spooky tunnels, bridges or the beat of clicky-clacky musical points; it just seems to reflect rather a lacklustre imitation of the previous memorable railway, but instead laid on a low-use bank of the quayside – totally restricted to expand, attract or be of use. Before, parents watched over their children sitting in their cars close by, having lunch. Maybe, with twice-repeated printed restrictions on all those pioneers who contributed their £20 towards a metre of galvanised three-rail track (is this all railways consists of?), by having to wait patiently for our planet Earth to reach the same point X in our vast orbit around the sun to qualify for another single trip on the train, I'd suspect that 'rail fever' is more likely to be instead redirected to potential pedalo hire boats 'groovun about' on the vast blue quay tidal water itself, its assets as yet completely ignored. Yet by all means let us all cheer on something to entertain our young-at-heart visitors. Presently our town seems to be acting as a mere staging post for transport to the great unknown, so let there be some vision: thoughts, ideas and imagination to uplift our town – its image and attraction – not just to appease a nine-to-five adoration of Mammon, but for an alternative life, welcoming enchantment, fun and enriching progress in concert with our holiday area ethos and natural scenic blessings.
