A GROUP working towards greener energy shared its love of wind power with the next generation on Valentine’s Day.
South Dartmoor Community Energy had fun with local youngsters in Ivybridge Library, decorating and making mini windmills and coming up with ideas to save energy at home.
The event was organised to support the Blown Away campaign from 10:10, a national charity campaigning to reduce carbon emissions and ensure renewable energy sources get the same level of government support as fossil fuels and nuclear power.
Top energy saving tips from the children included ‘closing the fridge quickly when we get something out of it’ from Toby, six, and ‘turning lights off when we don’t need them’ from Alice, five.
SDCE cites a 2015 Citizens Advice report which found that if the government does not support renewable energy, householders will face even bigger energy bill rises. The group says onshore wind and large-scale solar is cheaper to build than any other low carbon energy generation.
Organiser Sophie Phillips from SDCE said: ’We were really pleased with the number of families who joined us to have a go at making the windmills.
’It is important to publicly show support for wind power, as those against it are often heard the loudest.
’National surveys repeatedly show that more than 70 per cent of the general population are in favour of onshore wind power. The same surveys show that only 17 per cent of people support fracking and only 34 per cent of people support the use of nuclear.’
SDCE wants to see more community owned renewable energy projects, and is currently working on a project for roof top solar photovoltaics at Lee Mill Industrial Estate. For more information find South Dartmoor Community Energy on Facebook and Twitter or visit www.southdartmoorcommunityenergy.org .
