The Salcombe Town Regatta took place last week, with races of all kinds as well as performers, parades, stalls, fireworks and world-record holders.

Annual favourites the mud race, crabbers race, harbour swim, raft race and the greasy pole were all back for 2015, attracting large crowds despite the sometimes dodgy weather.

The boat show was held on Whitestrand on Tuesday, with many boat sellers displaying their wares. Also present was the Community Seagrass Initiative, a science project run by the public aiming to raise awareness of the importance of seagrass habitats, with members promoting seagrass to the hundreds of visitors.

Later that day the Ocean Valour team of Tom Rainey and Lawrence Walters returned to Salcombe after having rowed from New York to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity. The pair were met by a flotilla of local boats and the RNLI as quadruple world-record holders.

Tom and Lawrence are now holders of the world record for the ‘greatest distance rowed in 24 hours by ocean row boat’, the ‘youngest rower, Lawrence Walters, to row the Atlantic’, the ‘first team of two to row from the USA to mainland UK’ and the ‘youngest crew to row the Atlantic’.

The pair were welcomed home by family, press and well-wishers and were given free accommodation at the South Sands Hotel to recover from their epic 93-day challenge.

The fireworks took place on Thursday, with the Salcombe Gospel Choir, Dartington Morris Men, the Crooked Tempo Samba Band and singer Tom Baker entertaining the crowds on Whitestrand as they waited for the sun to go down, before the sky was lit up with the stunning display.

Dozens of events took place over the weekend and one lucky lady who was on her hen party was entered into all the events of the week, completing most in just a bikini and a ‘Bride to Be’ sash.

Debbie Hainey, chair of the regatta committee, said: ‘We had a brilliant 2015 regatta week – the sun was shining, most of the time, all our new events were a hit, with happy people everywhere.

‘We would like to thank everyone involved in helping us make our week so good, including local businesses, residents and organisations – all came together to help us.’

A spokesman for the regatta said: ‘We’ve been getting some amazing feedback and we would like to say thank you for that.

‘We would also like to thank all the committee members, volunteers, performers, sponsors, stallholders and members of the public who attended events and donated. We couldn’t do it without you.

‘Special thanks to Salcombe Fire Brigade, Salcombe RFC, Salcombe RNLI, the Harbour Authority, Salcombe Yacht Club, Salcombe Rowing Club, the council, the police and the tourist information centre for all your hard work helping

us to promote events and keep everyone safe.

‘If anyone would like to get involved with next year’s regatta, please think about joining the committee. We need helpers, no matter how much or little time you can spare.’
