YEALMPTON’S annual garden show has enjoyed another fruitful year, with a bumper crop of entries including many from local children.

The show took place on Saturday, September 10 at the village community centre in Stray Park.

Judging took place throughout the morning before doors were flung open to the public from 2pm.

And although organisers reported visitor numbers were slightly down on last year, they had around 550 exhibits to display including 75 from the local primary school.

Yealmpton Allotments & Gardeners Association members had been helping the school’s Garden Gang prepare for the show, and the youngsters’ hard work paid off with great results. The club won the tallest sunflower category and the heaviest marrow, and were narrowly pipped to the post in the largest pumpkin class by Gordon Avery’s giant specimen.

Special mention must go to Gordon, who celebrated his 87th birthday on the day of the show. Having been exhibiting for 60 years, Gordon marked the day by coming second in total points in the members’ section.

Best in show was won by David Bradford and his perfect onions.

Show secretary Ian Tope said: ’Our thanks go to Nicky Collins from the primary school for organising all the entries of decorated eggs, paper plate faces and vegetable animals. Thanks also to all the local businesses that donated raffle prizes or advertised in our show programme, and all the people that helped out on the day.’
