Elford Fine Art, Tavistock’s unique gallery of period and contemporary paintings, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a grand exhibition and sale. The event highlights the rich artistic heritage and natural beauty of Devon and Cornwall with a specially curated display of oils and watercolours by distinguished local, national and international artists from the 19th century to today.
The anniversary exhibition, at The Gallery in Drake Road, includes more than a dozen impressive Dartmoor scenes by the popular Devon artists, Frederick John and William Widgery. Familiar landmarks featured include Brentor, Sheepstor, Leather Tor, Haytor and Okehampton Castle as well as Wallabrook, Teignhead and Fingle Bridges.
Cornish pictures are a feast for the eyes, with important works from the world-renowned art colonies of Newlyn, St. Ives and Falmouth. Of particular note is a spectacularly detailed portrait of a Newlyn fisherwoman painted in watercolours more than a century ago by Walter Langley.

In contrast, a captivating oil painting of children, travelling along a country lane with caravan and donkey, showcases the exceptional broad-brush, impressionist technique of Harold Harvey, another pioneer of the Newlyn School.
There is a strong maritime section, featuring works by Charles Napier Hemy, Henry Scott Tuke, Terrick Williams and Arthur Wilde Parsons. These images of yesteryear are complemented by showpiece contemporary pictures, including colourful, new beach scenes by Duncan Palmar and exquisite miniature watercolours of the Tavistock area by Rosalind Pierson.

All the pictures are available to purchase and the gallery is open between 11am and 3:30pm from Friday October 31 to Saturday November 8 (closed on Sunday) and on other days by appointment.
